AIDS Alliance Launches Education Campaign For Carnival
by Jeanneau Martelly
The Caribbean HIV and Aids Alliance is revving up its sensitization campaign ahead of the peak activities for this year’s Carnival celebration.
The Alliance plans to target band leaders and revelers to educate them on safe sex practices. Senior Program Officer Erma Kerry Smith says Carnival is a time when people engage in risky behaviour.
In addition the Ministry of Health will be distributing condoms throughout Carnival celebrations to ensure revelers practice safe sex.
“It’s a time when persons party a lot where there is the likelihood for them to engage in heavy drinking and use of other substances. That places them at risk for HIV transmission. We would like to target many of the revelers. So we are hoping to have sessions at the various band meetings to educate people to sensitize them” she said
The Caribbean HIV and Aids Alliance in May opened an office in Saint Lucia. The group works specifically with vulnerable groups in response to HIV and AIDs in the Caribbean.
