Lucian Men Urged To Monitor Prostate Health

by Kendal Burton

Local men have been encouraged to get tested for prostate cancer early. The call came from Dr. David Brathwaite from Barbados during a health presentation at the Anglican Church on Sunday.

According to him prostate cancer screening can help identify cancer early on, when treatment is most effective, but very few men get prostate exams compared to women who get mammograms. He suggested that their reluctance to seek medical care plays a part in why men die so much earlier than women. He cited Jamaica as an example. It has the highest incidence of prostate cancer in the region.

Screening Dr. Brathwaite says is often quick and easy, and recommends men over the age of 50 get annual screenings. But he says, individuals also bear the responsibility to learn as much as they can about prostate cancer, particularly its risk factors and potential symptoms.
